Save Time on Your Commute to Work With These 5 Tips

Since you spend a considerable amount of time commuting to and from work, it makes sense to be strategic about how you use that time. Multitasking is great, as long as it’s safe and you’re doing two things that don’t tax the same part of your brain. In fact, it works, because each activity is enriched when combined with the other.

Here are five ways to turn commuting time into productive time:

  1. Check your email.

While commuting, catch up on reading your emails, but don’t respond. Simply going through your inbox gives you a nice head start on the day. And, you can decide which ones need to be top priority when you arrive at the office.

  1. Listen to podcasts.

Set your iTunes in advance to automatically download podcasts on topics ranging from career tips to foods and recipes to comedy and travel. Try Stuff You Should Know or The New Yorker, for starters.

  1. Read a book.

Literally or on tape, how often do you have time to enjoy a good book? Just be aware that listening while driving can be distracting, especially if you choose a compelling work of fiction. To minimize risk, opt for a nonfiction work such as a self-help guide. You’ll avoid getting lost in the story, while gathering information that can enrich your life.

  1. Catch up on phone calls.

If you’re the driver, be sure to use Bluetooth or another hands-free option. Check in with your loved ones as you catch up on personal calls. This can make someone else’s day – as well as yours – a lot better, just to share an update or exchange a hello.

  1. Meditate.

Among its many benefits, practicing regular meditation can help lower stress, control anxiety, enhance self-awareness and lengthen your attention span.

  • Calm is a great app for meditation. You can choose exactly how long you want to meditate – anywhere from three minutes to an hour. It comes complete with your choice of a voice – or not – as well as beautiful scenery descriptions and nature sounds. It has guided meditations for myriad situations, including one called Commute!
